What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo, the national sport of Korea (see also Taekwondo - History), is made up of three words: Tae - meaning foot or kick, Kwon - meaning hand or hitting, and finally Do - meaning way, symbolizing that Taekwondo is not just a series of techniques but rather a way of life. Taekwondo is usually translated as 'the way of the hand and foot', but the founder of LSTK prefers the translation 'training for life by using your hands and feet'.

All martial arts contain more techniques than one can see in competitive sparring. In the traditional martial arts, knowledge is virtually limitless and all-encompassing. Still, different martial arts do choose to emphasize different techniques and methods of application. That which immediately distinguishes Taekwondo from other martial arts is the frequent use of high kicks, with advanced practitioners jumping and spinning to deliver precise and powerful blows with their feet.
